Connecting Science to Policy and Action

In addition to seeking to discover the new knowledge that is needed to help solve big societal challenges, Dr. Lubchenco focuses her energy on connecting existing scientific knowledge to policy and action.

Through publications: 
  1. Updating our narrative about the ocean, by realizing that it is not too big to fail nor is it too big to fix, but it is too important and too central to our future to ignore; 
  2. Flipping the script from the ocean as a victim of climate change to the ocean as a solution to climate change;  
  3. Heeding the evidence that fully protected MPAs can deliver biodiversity, climate, and food security benefits.    
  4. Realizing that food from the sea offers a pathway to global food security.

Through partnerships:
Lubchenco has served on the Boards of Directors or Trustees of numerous organizations, including the World Resources Institute, Environmental Defense Fund, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Royal Swedish Academy’s Beijer Institute for Ecological Economics, SeaWeb, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, The Nature Conservancy, Harvard University Board of Overseers, National Geographic Society, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Oceano Azul Foundation, and SeaBOS.
